How to properly remove and replace bushings

Easily remove and replace bushings with the knowledge you’ll find in this article. Learning the required tools, preparation procedures, and, most importantly, dos and don’ts can help you have a good installation and prevent common blunders.

Choosing the right bushings

Before deciding on a bushing, consider the load, the weather, and the equipment you have. For example, graphite can endure extremely high temperatures, plastic can resist corrosion, and copper can support heavy loads. Think about the application’s speed and its capacity to carry loads. Find materials that can withstand the elements, figure out what you need to keep it lubricated, and make sure it fits. Think about how easy it is to replace or install, how long it will last, how much vibration and noise it makes, and how much it costs.

Preparations

Before anything else, be sure your shafting is within legal bounds. Here is a table to help you with this:

Shaft Tolerances

Thoroughly cleaning all pertinent components is essential, including the shaft, bushing bore, outer diameter (OD), and component boe (sprocket or sheave). and any other associated parts. Bushings are ineffective unless there is something foreign on the surfaces that they contact since their function is dependent on fiction and force. If there is any paint, dirt, oil, or grease, remove it.

Tool List

  • Adaptable wrench
  • Metal bar for breaking
  • A basic wrench set that contains the press kit’s nut sizes.
  • Adding a basic socket set that contains the press kit’s size nut is an optional extra.
  • To simplify things, you can choose to have a ratcheting wrench set.
  • Use a vise to secure one kit nut if desired.
  • Everything you need to press and pull bushings and bearings
  • Jack stands
  • Jack
  • Brake shackles
  • White lithium grease in a plastic container

Different situations of removing bushings

How to remove bushings from control arm

Disconnect the shock from the vehicle and secure it. Use a press to extract the bushings with controlled force.

Start Installation Bushings

Please follow these steps to ensure a successful installation:

  • The threaded holes on the component hub and the non-threaded holes on the bushing should be lined up before installation. You can use the threaded holes on the bushing to remove it. Regular mount and reverse mount are two ways to attach QD bushings.

  • After threading the bolts into their corresponding counterparts by hand, loosen the assembly by inserting them into the bushing’s non-threaded hole.

  • Align the assembly to your desired location after placing the key on the shaft. Make sure the key is securely fastened by tightening the set screw after you finish the last drive adjustment.

  • Tighten the bolts a little at a time until you reach the torque values that were specified. This gradual tightening allows the bushing to sit squarely and accurately.

Note: An air gap must perpetually exist between the component hub and the (QD/SPLIT-TAPER) bushing edge.

YOU MUST HAVE TAPE-LOCK BUSHINGS TO FOLLOW THIS INSTRUCTION:

  • Use a block and a rubber mallet to pound the bushing into the hub for bushings 3535 and larger. Switching between hammering the bushing and tightening the screws will keep the torque on the screws consistent.
  • This is a safeguard against performance-based compensation rather than an incentive for it.

Mistakes to Avoid When Installing Bushings

Mistakes To Avoid
Mistakes To Avoid
  • Incorrectly tightening the bushing hardware. As said before, a torque wrench is useful for precisely mounting bushings to their mating parts. Failure could result from over-torqueing if not addressed.

  • Mounting hardware or surfaces with an anti-seize chemical or lubricant. The bushing will sit deeper into the mating part, and both components will be subjected to higher stress, just like when over-torquing is used.

  • Changing the washer from split to flat split washers prevents bolts from backing out by biting into both the fastener and the bushing. This is not an advantage that flat washers offer.

  • Bushing hardware should not be tightened incrementally. This leads to the bushing becoming incorrectly positioned within the mating portion because you fully torque one bolt instead of alternately and increasingly tightening. Damage to a variety of components, inefficiency due to misalignment, and other issues are the results.

FAQs

Does it seem odd that he seemed to need to loosen the bearing tool to get it off the control arm?

Yes, it does seem unusual that he needed to loosen the bearing tool to remove it from the control arm.

Is there a way to remove bushings without a tool?

To remove bushings, you don’t need pricey, specialized equipment; all you need is a drill, hacksaw, or chisel. Take care not to break anything nearby, and a specialized bushing removal tool will make the process easier and more controlled.
